AhlulBayt News Agency - Hours ago in the northeastern countryside of the Latakia Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103 Brigade of the Republican Guard – backed by the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), the National Defense Forces (NDF), and the Syrian Marines – have launched a powerful assault on the strategic town of Kabani after a series of successful military operations yesterday.
According to the battlefield correspondent Eyad Al-Hussein, the Syrian Armed Forces launched their assault from heights of Jabal Al-Zuwayqat; this site is located directly south of Kabani, but offers the government forces a clear path to the rebel stronghold.
The Syrian Armed Forces and the Russian Air Force have been relentlessly pounding Jabhat Al-Nusra’s (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) defenses at the southern flank of Kabani recently in order to weaken their defenses before they conduct the final assault to capture the town.
As of now, there have been no reported gains; however, several ground sources are reporting intense firefights between the Syrian Armed Forces and the extremist rebel forces.
The extremist rebel forces at the town of Kabani are comprised of fighters from Jabhat Al-Nusra, Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and the Free Syrian Army’s “1st Coastal Brigade” and “Liwaa Suqour Al-Ghaab” – all of these rebel groups have participated in the battle for the Kurdish Mountains (Jabal Al-Akrad).
